Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
