Individuals who experienced sexual abuse by Catholic clergy have expressed renewed hope following their initial encounter with Pope Leo at the Vatican.

Gemma Hickey, heading the anti-abuse organization, stated that the pontiff's decision to engage with them so early in his papacy spoke volumes about his dedication to addressing the issue.

Worldwide Strict Approach Pushed

The group is advocating for a worldwide zero-tolerance policy that would defrock any priest who confesses to or is proven of sexually abusing a minor. This policy has been implemented in the US.

The Pope recognized that there is "resistance in some parts of the globe" to this initiative, according to the representative.

"We were all being realistic when we acknowledged that there is pushback," Hickey stated.

Legacy Issue

The current pontiff, who assumed the position in May, has taken on this longstanding issue that has plagued the Catholic Church for many years.

Previous efforts to resolve the situation included an historic meeting on paedophilia within the Church and changes to church laws to clearly outlaw sexual abuse.

Personal Link

For the representative, who prefers gender-neutral pronouns, the drive for worldwide adoption of the policy is personal. The North American activist revealed they were abused by a clergy member who was later moved between various churches.

"Hopefully this will set the tone for his leadership, because we aim to collaborate with him," they expressed. "We have the common objective, we seek to end clergy abuse."

Significant Meeting

Seven representatives of the organization, which includes survivors and supporters from over thirty countries, engaged with the Pontiff in his official residence.

The discussion, initially planned for a brief period, lasted to a sixty minutes, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The pontiff was characterized as "very understanding" when hearing the story of a woman victimized at a Catholic residential school for native youth in North America.

They noted the leader was "compassionate" about their personal experience and seemed "modest, funny, and approachable."

"Survivors have consistently sought a voice in discussions and I didn't perceive like he was giving us lip service," they stated. "I felt like he was sincere, practical, and very open and eager to work with us."

Church Regulations Reforms

The group is hoping that changes to canon law will enable the implementation of the zero-tolerance policy globally.

They have consulted specialists and gathered documents that they plan to present to the pontiff.

"He appeared engaged in reviewing it," Hickey remarked.

Responsibility Emphasized

A recent Vatican-commissioned report emphasized the "necessity of a efficient process for the resignation and/or dismissal of religious officials or personnel in cases of misconduct or negligence."

The document also noted that victims repeatedly stressed the "urgent need for church leaders and senior officials to be held accountable for negligence and cover-up."

Moving Forward

The representative revealed they informed the Pope at the start of their meeting: "This is as much a risk for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

Following the encounter, they voiced hope for future change.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the conclusion, uniting and building a relationship and continuing to build that bond is a step in the correct path," Hickey stated.

They added that they shared with the pontiff: "Just because it's a dark chapter, I feel like we can change how the narrative concludes - he appreciated that."
